Week Fourteen: McLuhan and Media Future

Cell phone is the medium I mostly use. I started using after when I was 12. Before then, I used public phone or use school office phone by begging. When I did that, there was talk limit and no privacy. Now, using cell phone more than 12 years, I cannot imagine the life without this medium. Especially after smart phone came out, a lot of things changed. There are so many brilliant applications and we can send message instantly with people who are not there but feels there. Social media such as also gets so popular and I believe social media is one of the strong ways to affect on people’s thought. It includes many different format of information such as video, photos, drawings, music or writings. Because of easy access, it spreads so easily, re-produced by secondary people and being made as parody. People are getting entertained with this medium and I think it has power.

A New Short Story: Look Out, The Saints Are Coming Through

I could read only first page of the story. I tried but all the expression used in this story is so unfamiliar to me. Anyway, what I understood is:  there is a guy who was waiting for parking space. For no reason, somebody took it away right in front of the guy simply. What changes can be adapted using another medium? I would change it as animation. I might change the age of the characters. I can also make cars as something different. If I keep the basic idea of the story, a lot of things can work I think. Fighting over putting something somewhere. It could be animals waiting for an apple falls from the tree.

Game as media

Writing all these blogposts, it sounds that I am those type of person who don’t do anything or don’t like anything but I need to say this. I don’t like game and I barely play game. So for writing this down, I went all the way back I was 9 who playing RPG game. When I was young, those types of games were so popular. The game called Princess Maker3 was one of them. I can sure that most girls in my age know from my country know this game and have experienced playing this game. It was that popular.  The reason why it was popular was that it has story. It is Role Playing Game. In the game, players assume the roles of characters in a fictional story. The story of the game I mentioned is that a man adopted a girl who is not human for some reason (I think that her mother who is fairy was his friend and she kind of asked him if he can take care of her if something happened to her) and raises her. I think this type of game can be considered as literature since it has story.

Long Form Television

I don’t see American TV show that frequently because English is not my first language. It requires a lot of attention to understand the entire context in it even though there is subtitle. Also the main reason is that it is hard to feel related to the show by several reasons including cultural difference. It could be great reason why people looking at them but it my case, I just prefer looking at TV shows from my country. Anyway, there are still many people surrounding me who are fan of all the TV show listed on the website. Why it is popular? I think it is because of empathy. The audience’s thought “It could be me” has really great impact on the popularity of the show since it hold the audience and makes them feel they are related. Being related with the show, they get satisfaction through the character experiencing many different things that they cannot easily do. One of the example could be Orange is the New black which is the famous TV show from Netflix. I think the reason why it is popular is many minor people such as woman or other race people involve themselves in the show. The story that minor get arrested and go to jail can happen so easily.

Graphic novel

Graphic novel is unfamiliar format for me. It was first time get to k now about this term when I was taking writing studio class in here. Honestly I still don’t know what is the difference between graphic novel and comic. When I read the book called Understanding Rhetoric, I felt that it has too many words to say that it is comic. It looks like all the drawings exist for the texts. For me, when I looking at comic, I feel like drawings are main thing and texts are sub thing. Then what is the difference between these two that people generally think? Comic book has a single continuing series. It tells one story over many issues. Graphic novel has a single volume collecting the stories. It tells many storylines in one book.

Jim Jarmusch : Dead man(1995), Mystery Train(1989), Down by law(1986)

There are several common things in these three movies by Jim Jarmusch. Characters are developed by dialogue. Dialogue is one of the important elements in his movie. Also color is muted or black and white which cause the overall noir tone of the film. There are a lot of long shots.  He set outsiders as main characters. His story is about outsiders who are different race and who use different language traveling America. They came to America with some reason with expectation of their fantasy in America. His movies tell about this gap between fantasy and reality using characters and their point of view. He used international actors. Music is also important in his movie.
